Innocence is often seen as weakness. People assume that anyone who views the world with an innocent outlook must also be unintelligent and powerless. I don’t believe this to be the case at all. In fact, I think it is the innocent people of society who are the strongest. Innocence connotes purity of heart and when a person operates from this standpoint, he or she is not distracted by ego.
I have built my business on innocence. I have been told too many times to count that my attitude and those of my associates are not conducive to operating a successful business. But I never payed heed to the naysayers because I needed to follow my heart, which is deeply rooted in the remote villages of India.
The artisans that I have spent my whole life observing and learning from are the most innocent and strong of all. Any success that I have experienced in life is because of these rural weavers. They understand the basics of life often without having ever stepped into a classroom. Although they face many hardships, in some ways their life is a bit simpler in terms of not having to battle inner ego.
Our innocent weavers are so powerful, in fact, that they are able to make deep, impactful connections with customers located thousands of miles away. It is the innocence of our weavers that attracts customers to Jaipur Rugs. Because of the stressful and changing nature of our world, customers yearn for simplicity.
What common link or connection would a rural artisan in remote India have with someone thousands of miles away, say in Australia or England? The connection may not be obvious but is most certainly there.
An increasing number of customers are being drawn to conscious companies because they no longer can support business as usual. Customers are extremely intelligent and aware of the suffering that big business can cause. That is why conscious companies are the wave of the future. It is this attitude that connects customers to our rural artisans.
In India, guests are god and we love hosting customers from abroad. Some even get the opportunity to interact with the weavers who have made the rugs they’ve purchased. This is meaningful interaction for both the customers and weavers alike. It is not often that you can meet and engage with the person who made a product you have purchased.
During these meetings, powerful connections are made and both parties benefit immensely. Customers can experience a world so very different from their own. They have the chance to see the villages where the artisans work and live. Customers can also meet their families and gain a deep understanding of exactly what went into making their unique rug.
At the same time, artisans can meet people from a culture that is so different from their own. The core purpose of Jaipur Rugs is to nurture the creative capacity of our artisans and thereby empower them to fulfil their aspirations and live a dignified life. By interacting with customers, artisans are able to see the fruits of their labor and can gain insight into how important and cherished their work is.
Every weaver at Jaipur
Rugs knows that they are creating more than just a rug. They are creating
blessings and sending them to the customers who are a part of this global
family. These strong connections are woven into each and every rug that an
artisan makes.
