Organizations cannot operate without people and it is this emphasis on the human element that is so exciting in today’s business world. We now live in a time when companies strive to create a conscious and mindful culture of communication that works toward empowering employee communication to serve customers better.
Communication in business is like water to plants. Over the years of developing a successful company the one thing that helps in its growth is communication. It is through communication, I realised what was going wrong in my business and leadership. Developing a culture of communication has become a necessity for the organization to move forward.
How well is a leader connecting with the employees? How well is a leader able to connect the organization’s purpose with that of the employees? These two questions are crucial in determining how much a leader is doing things right.
I believe in the power of communication and therefore interaction to me is like breathing. All my life I’ve tried to invest my time in interacting with people. Through human connections we can learn not just about their likes and dislikes but also it becomes a path to find our passion and face our vulnerabilities. And that is what will contribute in understanding what is required.
Business to me is next to love and it is through communication I wish to close the gaps that society has created in the name of caste and hierarchy.
Nurturing a culture of communication enables a safe place where everyone can question, learn and seek the answers they require. Through communication a mirror of transparency is created among the people. A person is not a problem to solve using a formula. They are a mixture of what ifs and what nots, by giving them the space we are channeling their pure and raw emotions through creativity and technical know how.
Few years back, while we decided to take our employees and customers to the rural villages to connect with our artisans, many pushed the idea away since village life was different and said it would ruin our goodwill and brand name. But today ‘Sensing journey’ is one of our most promising and successful projects where our customers and employees look forward to spend time with our artisans.
This way we nurture a way to develop a culture of communication between the employees, customers and artisans.
I also try to connect with my employees through an open door policy where any one can come and speak to me without any prior appointments. I don’t think sitting in a closed room will amplify my image or power. Communication is the key to understanding what works and what doesn’t.
The culture of communication is hard to ignore, but one of the ways it’s power can be enhanced is often overlooked because it isn’t technical. Every leader must find their own way to connect with people in ways that are meaningful and make business more people oriented. A leader’s position will grow extensively when they include both high quality communication techniques and attention to connect.
