Often during long walks around my hometown(Churu) in the evenings, I used to wonder about life and the purpose of living. Don’t we sometimes unknowingly, become a contradiction of what we actually wish to be?
Well, the search for a purpose never ends. While some go on in search of their purpose, many others keep jumping from one thing to another. Being a businessman has given me the freedom to explore and experiment. However, before I decided to pursue a business I was in a dilemma.
For several days, I kept reading and meditating for the answers. But, only later did I realise that the answers were within myself. Once I listened to my heart things became clear and gradually it helped me to find the purpose of my life.
Over the years of creating Jaipur Rugs, I realised that business is a way of living and not a balance sheet that gives out profits. For this very reason, I have always followed my heart and not targets.
This reminds me of an incident a few years ago, when an ex-inmate of Jaipur Central jail was shifted to Open jail and on the very first day, he came to meet me.
Vahid Khan came to request to set up a loom in the open jail since we had few looms set up in the central jail before. Within a few days, we installed a loom for him.
Vahid was convicted in his twenties, an incident he so deeply regrets. Weaving gave him a second chance in life and he believes he has evolved as a person in the past few years.
Though I started my journey in 1978 on the road to sell, today I’m on the road to healing.
It has been a wild journey filled with a lot of trials and tribulations but it has always been a celebration of love.
