After a year of uncertainty, I was really excited to meet my new set of divine heroes in person. After listening to their understanding and interacting for an hour I asked, ‘what is the destination you seek in your role here?’
Within a few seconds, I received a couple of answers where many were saying they want to make several changes in the present system and how they will use their knowledge to transform the challenges into opportunities.
After which I asked them since you are sure about your destination, are you also aware of the direction you want to go?
There was an abrupt silence, while some began to think deeply, others looked blank waiting for me to say something.
With a smile I told them, direction is an inner feeling, a moment while the destination is driven by the mind.
Yes, it’s that simple! My beginning in business too happened the same way.
I often say that I didn’t choose to weave. Weaving chose me.
I didn’t seek the destination when I decided to weave instead my weavers showed me the direction. I just followed them. Growing up with them made me realise that one of the major challenges they face is the exploitation of middlemen. Eliminating them from the system became my priority.
For this, I adopted a different model where the weavers were paid twice and on time while giving them a chance to work from home by providing them with all the raw materials they need.
This made them happier and more productive. People discover their best selves when they are treated with fairness and dignity, and especially when given a chance to earn a sustainable livelihood with the work of their hands.
At that time if I focussed on my destination then I don’t think today Jaipur Rugs would even exist.
So my suggestion to you is to focus on the direction and eventually you will reach your destination.
Start with what you have, build a path with your understanding and it will direct you to the destination you want to reach.
